THE QUESTION

Your book "Come on People"
I watched the show, you looked good for an old guy (I'm only 65), and I share many of your concerns,
but the only question I have about this wonderful effort you're giving to get some people in America to choose a different value system that might make them better citizens is:

The people in trouble are, as you stated, high school dropouts.
The only book they ever read was the one they keep adding pages to at the courthouse.

If they can't read, and won't read, how will some of this excellent information get to them?

I read recently where aids among black females in the St. Louis is skyrocketing - they said they didn't know about it. This lack
of education is a killer for them -

Who will take the lead in getting a gun out of their hands and your book there instead?

I'm doing my part in the white community by keeping after kids who want to do the cool things like the droopy pants, asking if they're too dumb to know the bill of a baseball hat goes in front...things like that...I know it ain't much, but I get as deep in the pool as the law and common sense allows.

Thanks for you.

Dear usne7ss,
What Dr. Cosby wants us to do as Black people is to go back to the "Village". See when I was a kid, you did not disrespect adults, you tried your best in school, because that is what the Black community demanded and you were protected from "adult" language and themes. We need to begin to respect and care for our children again, let them know that we are concerned about the what goes into their minds, bodies and spirits. We must all begin to look out for each other as we did in the past. That is what we are being challenged with by Bill Cosby now.

I wonder if the "Village" you mention can also mean something more individual, localized, and specific. I'm not sure if there is one solution that will work for every person, because there are so many different factors involved in any situation. Context, location, time period, personalities, cultures, and so on, all play a role. But, despite these different factors, if we (as individuals) tend to our immediate villages, small (family, school, work, friends, cities), we'll "take care of things" in a sensitive and manageable manner.

With this topic, I'm reminded of Voltaire's Candide, where the title character travels around trying to discovering the correct path in life. He meets optimists and pessimists and so on, and each have something to offer, but they each also have weaknesses, with one being that they absolutely believe their one way is the grand solution to understand or cope with everything. In the conclusion, Candide is exhausted with it all, and ends up tending to his garden.

We may not find the way to get rid of all the "weeds" once and for all, because that may be an impossibility. However, if we tend to our own gardens, or to use another term, our various villages, we can at least manage to do something constructive with somewhat immediate, nourishing, and motivating results.
