Are we all the human race? Why are people have to be called labels such as black and white. Does stereotypes and labels created hate, racism, and other cultural problems?

In an ideal world we would not have to separate ourselves by race or any other social category but in the United States in particular we have a history of racism. Our history is such that in the past whites who were dominant (and some would argue still are) discriminated against people of color. We all know that it wasn't just discrimination but slavery and violence. Many say that our history has no relevance today but unfortunately our social, cultural and institutional systems have been created on the foundation of racism. I think it's important to acknowledge our history and acknowledge our differences. Listen to each other, embrace our differences and learn from each other. I've included a link that has 10 facts about race. As stated, race is a social construction and definitions and categorizations of race have changed over time. Although race is a social construction, wiping out all racial categories would not ensure equality. We need to work within the system that exists. I would love for people to acknowledge our differences, celebrate our racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and try and learn from each other. Only through that acknowledgement can we work towards a better future where everyone's ideas, interests and needs are accounted for.

Stepanie, congratulations you have made two crucial points. Race is a myth (J. Graves). Biology and genetics tells us that we all belong to the family Hominidae, genus Homo, species sapiens. For everyone of us, our ancestors some 50K years ago came from Eastern Africa. The term race is socially divisive and scientifically wrong. As a social contruct race had no validity. Leo Buscaglia in "Love" devotes a whole chapter to labels and describes how they are destructive and inconsistent with love.

Are we all the human race? Yes. DNA is especially showing now that the labels are really meaningless.
