THE QUESTION

Delaware Ohio needs a proven program to wake the underprivledge kids up to Education as a way to life success. Do you recommend one?
Bill Cosby,

I wanted to let you know that I got chills when I heard your comments about “shake down”. I can use that in my white American family!! It is great to hear that it is alright to take control of the child’s life. I have two girls 9 and 11. So I have not had too much experience with rebellion, but I know it is coming and if I can avoid it and still get my values across that is great! Go forward with my eyes open.

This past school year our school was given a resource, a staff member, from United Way to make a difference in our community. This resource is a person that will run programs that will help our kids in a city in central Ohio to make their lives better. She came to me to ask what would be helpful in this community. Thank the Lord my husband and I are fine and do not need much. We both have a good education and I am a stay at home mom that volunteers everywhere and thinks up many ideas and give my opinion always. My husband has a nice job and can be extremely involved in the raising of our two children. So we have no needs from this resource, except to have her implement programs that are more bang for our buck! We need a program that teaches our underprivileged children the power of educational success. Do you know of any programs that we can implement?

My mind has been running through this one thought… what is best for one person to be able to accomplish for the whole community. I think back to some of the inner city programs that I have seen on the 20/20 type programs. I cannot come up with any that will help our children learn about what an education does to your later opportunities. It kills me to think that mothers and fathers are telling their kids to get a “good” job out of high school and think they are doing the best for their kids. The best for their kids is to go one to college and then get a great job.

How can we instill in these kids that their future is not just at Kmart or Walmart?

Thank you for taking your time to write a book and to get this message out to the people. I am so sorry for those that are so deep in this funk that they lash out at you instead of seeing you as a lifeline.

Hi Bigheart!

I agree that most of us can use a "shake down," and like your line of thinking - what is best for one person to be able to accomplish for the whole community . . . THAT is a great question to keep in mind!

There are many interesting programs and projects going on in many parts of the country and they can provide inspiration, models, and ideas for problems in our own communities. I'd like to share one that I like:

This is a list of 12 lessons learned from the Amistad Academy in New Haven, CT.

I'm looking forward to hear others weigh in on this. Great question, BigHeart!

I have a suggestion, though it is not a program. I have just written an audio book called 'A Point of Reference' 'the talk'. It covers many of the issues that young men of any race will confront in their early teens. This tool could be used with a parent/teacher/mentor to help encourage them toward finishing their education and give them information about other important situations that will arise in their teen lives. Topics such as sex, relationships, money management, getting, having and keeping jobs and education.
