THE QUESTION

How do we get our states to know our drug laws? If enforced, we could make a huge dent in drugs!
In Oct of 05, after a car arrived, idled for a moment and then sped out of our driveway, I found my daughter in our basement, seizing on cocaine, date rape drug and chloroform....plastic air mattress on her face, poles on her legs and a profanity statement written on our basement wall. I was told no crime had been committed. She died 5 days later while on life support. We donated her organs.

It took me 2 years to prove to my state (Georgia) that a crime had been committed. Controlled Substance Homicide. They are just now investigating it as if it were a crime. Most leads have gone cold.

During the 2 years, I wrote the Governor, who sent my request to the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation), who in turn sent it back to my chief of police who always state No Crime Had Been committed. I wrote our Senators who said I needed to write the Governor. My voice was completely recycled and fell on deaf ears.

I eventually found the White House Office of Drug Control Policy and they are trying to help me.

I want our drug laws known. For every overdose, we can yank one or more drug suppliers (even if recreational fun!) off the streets. What a dent we could make in drugs!

If I had drugs, and knew I could go to prison for sharing them with you, as a friend (if anything happened to you as a result of my drugs shared), I would be reluctant to share them with you, or sell them to you.

To whom do we speak? To whom do we have a voice?
dd aka/Christi's mom

Bill Cosby indicated we could make a difference. I am trying so very hard to do so....but am a "nobody"....I am just a mom!

Hello DD,

I am very sorry for your loss. First, I am not sure if you were being facetious, but I would like to say that you are not a "nobody." Second, it seems like you are already making small ripples within the system by writing to our government (even if you don't think so). Albeit, sometimes these small ripples don't appear to change anything, but rest assured that if enough of us make these ripples, we'll make a big splash.

Third, I am unsure if drug dealers knowing the consequences of their actions would be a true deterrent. From the drug dealers I have dealt with in counseling, they seem to be pretty smart and cognizant of their actions and the resultant consequences. Most of the time, they either don't care or are willing to make that trade off.

To be honest, I am not sure what the best solution is. One solution that has seemed to work is educating our young on the dangers of drugs. There was a government funded program in the 80's that did this with some success--you may remember D.A.R.E. I think they are still around, so you may want to check them out.

Another preventative measure is making sure that we are aware of what our children are doing--knowing what is going on in their lives, who they hang out with, where they are going to hang out.

Along the same lines, joining/starting a neighborhood watch program in your community is a good way to build relationships within the community as well as prevent crime.

I hope that has added some food for thought,

RE
