THE QUESTION

How do you feel about Sherri Shepherd on the ABC's The View?
I think she, once again, perpetuates the stereotype of the FAT BLACK WOMAN that is dumb and what white viewers like to see.

I think that could be better answered on the VIEW website rather than here. What purpose does this question serve? Are we to imply that SS is mammy answering to Barbara? I dont get it...

No, but aren't people tired of the same stereotypes shown in the media?

She's not a STEREOTYPE SHE'S WHO SHE IS!!! How is that a stereotype?!?! Now what, you want to get the fat sucked out of her too like Star?!?!? Get a clue. Anything else on your mind besides some mindless crap about some insignificant talk show host?

Yes, what are your feelings on how Black people are portrayed on TV and film?

You are equating a REAL person with actors on TV. They are not the same. My feelings, as if they matter, are that people are portrayed as who they are in entertainment/news media.

As far as prime time TV shows, yeah, we need another Cosby show (I thought House of Payne was that attempt), but that doesnt sell.

What people keep trying to pit against one another is the reality of the street, with the sambo bamboozled mentality, with the complex middle class characters some black folk want to see. Why does there have to be a monolithic in media? Can't we have Ice-T as both the "Cop Killer" and the Cop on Law & Order? Can't we have the Denzel in Training Day, American Gangster AND in Hurricane, Glory...?

Does it always have to be serious? Does it always have to be funny? Does it always have to be gangsta?

The answer of course is no. Just like there is NO ONE BLACK LEADER in the 21st century, there is no one right "way" to portray black folk on your TV, video, film and music.

PS - take a look at Jerry Springer, the Jessica Simpson show, anything with Brittney on it and you'll see it's not a black/white thing its a stupid thing. Stupid is selling pretty hot right now!!

A big mistake that a lot of Black do themselves is to take one person and make them the example for the entire race. We are all individuals. Sherri Shepherd is an individual and has a right to be who she is. She's not a stereotypical Black. I think The View switched up and chose Black co-host that were lest uptight and judgmental, which is what Start Jones was. All the Black women who have hosted and guest hosted the show are educated, and all are unique in their own way.

There needs to be diversity within diversity.

Turn the TV off and read or purchase LOST, STOLEN OR STRAYED hosted by BILL COSBY. Remember the media will always do what it has done, period.
