You are equating a REAL person with actors on TV. They are not the same. My feelings, as if they matter, are that people are portrayed as who they are in entertainment/news media.
As far as prime time TV shows, yeah, we need another Cosby show (I thought House of Payne was that attempt), but that doesnt sell.
What people keep trying to pit against one another is the reality of the street, with the sambo bamboozled mentality, with the complex middle class characters some black folk want to see. Why does there have to be a monolithic in media? Can't we have Ice-T as both the "Cop Killer" and the Cop on Law & Order? Can't we have the Denzel in Training Day, American Gangster AND in Hurricane, Glory...?
Does it always have to be serious? Does it always have to be funny? Does it always have to be gangsta?
The answer of course is no. Just like there is NO ONE BLACK LEADER in the 21st century, there is no one right "way" to portray black folk on your TV, video, film and music.
PS - take a look at Jerry Springer, the Jessica Simpson show, anything with Brittney on it and you'll see it's not a black/white thing its a stupid thing. Stupid is selling pretty hot right now!!
