THE QUESTION

How do we motivate the African American youth?
My question is for a woman who's raising a young African American man, what are some of the things that we can do specifically to keep them motivated, to keep them positive despite all of the symbols that tell them that they're not gonna go far?

I think within your neighborhood, within your family making, having people to tell your child that they can do it, they can be anything that they want to be. And I speak from that experience that it was people in my life who told me I could be whoever I wanted to be that made me pursue college, a career, and other things. So, I think it's who you place in the life of your child that will make a difference to help you instill positive confidence in your child.

There are many ways to motivate our African American youth. Most youth want boundries. We can provide those boundries as parents not friends. We can not let them expand the boundries. Then we can limit the amount of television they watch and what they watch. If you are serious about this question than you have to be serious about whats reccomended. Most young adults can be motivated just by asking them what they want to become when they grow up. Then you can start focusing their attention on what interest them. But they must be exposed to other things besides sports and entertainment. There are a million things that they can do around the world of sports that offer them careers beyond sports. Help them explore the opportunities.

Discipline is the start. Teach your child boundaries and surround them with positive things. Take them to the museum, parks, help them become volunteers in the community. Do any and everything to occupy your child with positive, self sustaining messages.
