THE QUESTION

Droopy pants bill by FL Senator a positive step forward?
FL Sen. Gary Siplin has been pushing a bill to force schools to punish students whose saggy pants are worn in a "vulgar and indecent manner." Students in violation of the rule would face a verbal warning and a phone call home for the first offence, a three day suspension for a second offense and a ten day suspension for a third one. As a mentor working with youth who think wearing their pants in this manner is fashionable, I am kind of happy to see this bill come along. This isn't the first bill that has been introduced concerning this issue and the FL legislature has struck down previous similar bills. However, if the parents can't make the kids understand that if you portray a certain image that was started in prison, you are going to be treated similarly, then maybe the state can help enforce decent attire during state provided education instructional time.

I totally agree with having a reasonable dress code in our schools.

While I don't think that kids need to go to school dressed in suits & ties (male) and dresses (female), I don't think that it's at all unreasonable to demand that they don't wear styles that show their underwear, the start of their buttcracks, the tops of their pubic triangles, too much of their breasts, etc.

There's no sense in our young men coming to school dressed like hoodlums and our young women coming to school dressed like hookers.
