Help for retiring teacher traveling to New Orleans to donate books and supplies
Retiring Watertown, Massachsuetts teacher, graduate of UMASS 1967 to travel to New Orleans to donate legendary book collection and supplies - needs your help!

Fran is front page news!
http://www.wickedlocal.com/watertown/archive/x1375684276

Fran’s passion is and always has been teaching. As a teacher, helping her students succeed, regardless of challenge or disability, has always been her ultimate goal. Her pride and joy are her students, and nothing puts a smile on her face like watching them read, write, count, sing, dance, dream, and most of all, LEARN!
In fulfillment of her retirement dream, Fran is planning to travel to New Orleans to participate in a Teacher-To-Teacher program April 19-26 (April vacation week). During this time she will be a teacher-in-residence, sharing her skills and knowledge with teachers in classrooms in the public schools, and will begin donating books and materials to the schools there.

In lieu of a party or gifts, our family thought it would be most fitting to celebrate, honor and support Fran’s retirement by making donations to help defray the costs of her participation in the program, including the shipping of books and materials to New Orleans.

Please read the attached information about the Teacher-To-Teacher program. We are so excited about her participation!

Please send your donation towards Fran’s retirement celebration to:

TEACHER-TO-TEACHER PROGRAM
(A program sponsored by the Massachusetts Conference United Church of Christ, the Worcester Area Mission Society, UCC in partnership with the
Good Shepherd UCC of Metairie, Louisiana, and The Lisa Mains Saley Foundation for Kids)

The schools in Louisiana are among the poorest in the country. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, teachers and students are demoralized, without books, curriculum, and classroom materials.
Will you help?

• We are looking for teachers, teacher’s aides, and school librarians. These educators will go in pairs to a Gulf Coast school for the week, living in the community, sharing their skills, and being present to the staff and children.

• We are also looking for folks interested in education who have other talents, such as drama, music, history, or re-enacting to organize and present a dramatic road show that can travel from school to school for assemblies and have spin-off learning centers for schools that would like some classroom follow up. The topics will be based on some academic theme from their curriculum.

• The cost is $950/person, which includes airfare, food, simple accommodations, leadership and coordination, ground transportation in Louisiana, missionary accident insurance, and a festive dinner out. $200 of this cost goes towards donated supplies, tools, and building materials.

• Discounted shipping is available for additional donated classroom supplies and books – please see below for contact information.
