THE QUESTION

Has anyone noticed that we are in a British culture? Do you think that our problems extend from the fact that we opperate in a culture that is not innate to us?
I have been living in Japan for 12 years. I am an English teacher. I have noticed looking from Japan to America, that our problems as Black people in America may be linked to the culture we betray. We are not British. We have our own culture. Our culture was never taught to us. Our culture is natural to us and we conduct ourselves accordingly. The British culture is natural to the British and the Fore-Fathers. I think we need to study our culture and heritage. I am sure, if we return to ourselves and our own like the Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese and all the other cultures that make up America do, that we will see a major change.

I think this same problem is reflected in education also. We are taught at a pace that relates to British style of learning. I think the pace is too slow for our children. Remember, studies of learning and teaching were not conducted with our children and their rate of understanding in mind.

There are studies that show that we have a fast pace of learning. We need to teach advanced subjects at a sooner time.

I have taught Japanese children to read English as soon as four months. The youngest was reading at 2 years and 10 months and he could use a dictionary. This is not joke. The class was once a week, four times a month, one hour long. He was 1 year 9 months when he joined.

All I am saying is that we need to re-embrace our lost culture, everything and then I think we will see rapid changes. The British culture, no disrespect to it, is no where near as long and filled with accomplishments as ours. In fact, lots of our culture has been adopted into the British Culture.

Our problem is that we are chasing a culture that is chasing our culture. Just like a dog that chases his/her own tail will get dizzy and or go crazy.

Think about it. I have success, because I teach at a pace that is suitable to each student. My story is long, but very interesting.
