in 1778, i don't think there was such a thing as an american nation or 230 years of a national history that included government playing a major role in the lives of its citizenry. gov't has played a major role in the last 230 yrs, right? america is no longer a land of farmers and families and land holdings.
suggesting that adams doesn't mention race when it comes to national moral character and having that be some high moral ground, is mote. i believe i wasn't a citizen in 1778, along with quite a few other members of my race --and other non-white folk-- and women, for that matter. i don't think i was given full voting rights until, i don't know, 40 years ago, perhaps. so this national character which wasn't written about me at the foundation of republic, and this democracy that wasn't granted to me until 40 years ago, what does it mean coming from adams?
adams' words still apply about individuals and their obligation to the better angels of their natures, but the reality has changed dramatically in 230 years. i'm a citizen now, with my own skewed history to deal with in america. i have the right to dissent and offer my own opinion on what you and adams think is right. i'm not making excuses --you can't stand excuses, can you? i'm just saying i have a parallel teleology in this land of... ours.
so how do we cure today's families when it has been an old, old problem? let's look at ALL the old, old problems in america. the BIG old, old problem. you know what i'm getting at, don't you? and i'm not making excuses --you don't like excuses, do you?
