THE QUESTION

child sexual curiosity
My granson just turned 8 yr old last month and was recently caught with another little boy with pants down, looking and touching each other. My daughter is freaking out, but my son-in-law and I feel that this is 'normal' curiosity. We feel that he should be told about modesty (keeping private areas covered)and inappropriate touching.
However, this is the second or third incident: last known was a year or so ago. I still believe this stems from 'normal' curiosity. He doesn't appear to be obsessed with sexual matters vocally or by actions (aggressive).
What do you think, and what action should be taken?

i'm with you, brigetter. this is curiosity. i can't imagine your 8 year old grandson has a real concept of what he's doing sexually. the problems lay with the reaction to his actions and the way adults see things through adult eyes. if you stress over what the boy does, then he will stress. if him showing his genitals or touching someone else gets the people around him riled up he will continue to do it if he's not getting other positive reinforcement. and he craves positive reinforcement right now. trust me. talk to him like you've been doing. stress appropriate behavior in social settings. praise him for other things. don't let these incidents be the only thing he's known for in your family.
