THE QUESTION

Mr. Cosby,
I want to weigh in on the recent controversy regarding our African American youth and families. As we know, most of the issues we see and are experiencing started long ago and many of the problems stem from deeply rooted ideaologies that have plagued our culture from generation to generation. We know, as a people firmly vetted in the teachings of the bible, that our only way out of this dilemma is through the concept of love and understanding; but where will that love and understanding come from in a developing 'ME' society? How can we as a people trust a word ('love') that has such a powerful impact in our lives and better yet how serious will we take the person who even has the audacity to suggest it?
When we ask our great power on high to take the dislike and the hatred out of our own hearts; hatred which may have resulted from frustration or exhaustion, then and only then will we obtain a state of mind in which we can put aside differences and gain the understanding needed to address a situation with an effective resolution; otherwise we will continue to spin our wheels going infinitely nowhere.
We currently have a group of professionals ready to 'wake up' our youth and further our people through knowledge and hope, but we need someone or a group of persons to financially back this idea. We are ready to offer the necessary skills required to teach our youth, over a 6 month period, skills they can use to become productive citizens in our communities while in turn requiring them to put in a mandatory 2 years of service back into the program helping those coming up to be able to do the same. We are set to help our trained graduates start their own business, help make sense of credit, buying a home, car, interest rates, taxation, insurance, and savings.
Whether or how you respond to me may give you a better insight into why we constantly cycle back into widespread feelings of despair, hopelessness, and desperation.

"If we are not a part of the solution then we are a part of the problem."

First off I can tell that you spent alot of time formulating this question, but I see you left a critical part of the equation out of your dialogue. Children from the agers of 8-17. They are the ones that will be able to turn this situation around. In working with this age group if given a forum they will tell you what the problem is. When you are trying to teach these children right from wrong you need to ask them where they formulate their ideas. Secondly, you may be suprised to find children starting at 8 years old are very familiar with what is going on in the streets and their lives. I have worked with these children and the success I see is shocking. After a school year I saw such tremendous growth and saw barriers come down. It comes down to one word...Trust!! If they do not rrust you they will not listen. After you have accomplished this, then you can start talking about, repsect, jobs, and how they should deal with the professional world. Just my opinion and experience from what I do everyday. The only thing that will save a childs life is an education.

Check out this web site for grant funding opportunities: www.soros.org. This is just one source for grant funding.

David Miller, a fellow featured in Cosby's new book received a grant from this George Soros foundation called "Open Society Institute".

Here's some info on the funding David Miller received for his program that serves Black males in Baltimore City.

David Miller- 1999
Miller received a fellowship to establish a program that addresses the high rates of violence among urban African American males. Miller produced the Dare To Be King Curriculum a comprehensive system for adolescent African American males that addresses anger, impulse control, and decision making.
