THE QUESTION

Why hasn't there been a TV series, ala Walton's or American Dream, about the families in the south that go from absolute poverty to having all of their children obtain doctorates?

I would say "Roots" was a beginning toward that when you consider the success of the family portrayed in staying a family and that Alex Haley ended up a successful writer despite growing up in the Jim Crow south. I would say, however, MTV has done more to HURT black Americans by glorifying the gangster or thug life. Whether we humans like it or not, we are seen from the exterior first and when you wear baggy jeans riding off your backside that doesn't send a positive signal. Dignity starts with yourself. Be dignified, be classy, be honorable, be strong, be educated and be successful even in a world where you aren't treated fairly.

I would argue that "The Cosby Show" was our "Walton's". For all the grief it received for being too middle class and "not black enough" think of all the stars from the Harlem Renaissance era and the 60s who were on the show (either in person or via music/art) and all of the life lessons that were learned from that show. To be honest, the Cosby show helped make me into the person I am today. As a son of a single black mother, looking to Cos for guidance each Thursday night was inspirational (not to mention again and again via syndication). The show taught and truly displayed what it meant to be a part of the "American dream." I believe that without the Cosby show, Oprah show would never have taken off the way it did, nor would we have some of the other entreprenural efforts that are out there today. So TV can make a difference.

Why Bill? (if you are out there Mr. Cosby?) There are a few influential Black "celebrities" that could do this but I don't know why they don't? I'm a very good actor and would love to be a part of something like this. How many years has it been since "The Cosby Show"? Yes, too long! Is it that Black people don't want to view this? Or white people find a show like "The Cosby Show" too unbelievable, not realistic! But yet we have ALL these other shows that are SO unrealistic with an ALL white cast, and they are produced.
