THE QUESTION

A question related to the Image of Black Men in main stream society.
The dominant image of black men in main stream society is that we are criminals and prone to criminal behavior, that we will likely be illegitimate fathers, and that we are physically endowed but academically challenged. Although unfortunately many of our men have reinforced these stereotypes it is my belief that we are not the originators of these stereotypes. Would you agree with this statement?

Hello Genus,

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question. I don't know where the problem started. Or if the problem started with main stream society and then was only compounded by the next generation of young African Americans.

For me personally, I think the more interesting question is: What can we do about it? Can we help the next generation of young people? Unfortunately, these questions are not any easier to answer!

I want to state the following. I am a native born Black man. I am married with two children. I am a veteran. I have a master degree in education and a small business owner. What I say I say from experience. Black men are the masters of their own destinies. No one, no one puts a gun to their heads' and makes them do the things they do. Many of the negatives comments made about us are not true and unfair. However, many are. We have no one to blame for this but us. Black American men are feared and dispised by many ethnic groups to include blacks from other cultures! Absentee fathers and single mothers who are in denial are the major contributors to so many of us being in the condition we are presently in. I know from my heart things will not get any better in my lifetime. The brainwash job that has been laid upon the entire black american race is a tough cookie to crack. Black Americans in their paranoia see themselves as victims and not responsible for their actions. Whitey is to blame. And since whitey is to blame, the prevailing thought is they are not responsible for what they do and the "man" is wholly responsible for the condition we are in. This nonsense has made us social pariahs and worse. No one respects us. No one likes us. In fact we don't even like ourselves. This is a very sad commentary which will not change anytime soon. Bill Cosby's new book and the others that proceeded his are too little and far too late. Today's Black American male is a lost cause. Sad. Tragic. And very true. Perez M. Moore
